Spring Landscaping Checklist for Iowa Homeowners

Spring in Iowa does not come on a schedule. Some years March is mild and you are ready to plant by early April. Other years it snows in April and you are still waiting in May. But no matter how the weather shakes out, there is a natural progression to getting your yard ready. Trying to do everything at once is overwhelming and not always effective. Breaking it down by month keeps you on track without the stress.

March is about clean-up and assessment. As soon as the snow melts and the ground dries enough to walk on without making muddy footprints, get out there and rake the debris. Leaves that blew into beds over winter, branches that snapped under ice loads, and any trash that accumulated need to go. This is also the time to look at what survived the winter and what did not. You might find perennials that heaved out of the ground during freeze-thaw cycles or shrubs that took a beating from the cold. Make notes of what needs replacing and get those on your shopping list.

April is when things start happening fast. The soil warms up, and your lawn starts greening. This is the window for pre-emergent crabgrass control, applied before soil temperatures hit 55 degrees. It is also the time to fertilize cool-season grasses with a balanced lawn fertilizer. If you have bare spots, you can rake them up and overseed, though you will get better results with a fall seeding. April is also prime time for mulching beds, planting trees and shrubs, and installing any new hardscape you want for the summer. The weather is usually cooperative, and the ground is workable.

May is when the last frost date passes, usually around mid-month for the Cedar Valley. That is your signal to plant annuals and tender perennials without worrying about a freeze killing them. Get your vegetable garden in the ground. Set up your irrigation system if you have one. Start mowing weekly and set your mower deck to 3 to 4 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, holds moisture, and develops deeper roots. It also crowds out weeds naturally. And do not forget to keep up with weeding. The weeds are growing just as fast as your good plants in May.

Throughout this whole period, pay attention to drainage. Spring rains in Iowa can be intense, and a wet April or May will expose every low spot and drainage problem in your yard. If you see water pooling against your foundation, standing in the middle of the lawn, or running down your driveway in a sheet instead of soaking in, make a note. Those problems are easier and cheaper to fix in spring than they will be after everything is planted and grown in. A French drain, a catch basin, or some regrading can solve issues that will plague you all year.
