French Drain Cost in Iowa: What to Expect
A French drain is one of the most effective solutions for yard drainage problems. It collects subsurface water and carries it away from your house, foundation, or low spots. If you are dealing with a wet yard, a French drain is probably part of the solution. But before you decide to install one, you need to know what it costs and why. In the Cedar Valley, French drain prices vary based on the length, depth, soil conditions, and how much restoration work is needed after the trench is backfilled.
The typical range for French drain installation in Iowa is $40 to $80 per linear foot. That includes trenching, perforated pipe, washed gravel backfill, landscape fabric to separate the gravel from the native soil, and an outlet for the water to discharge. A standard residential French drain is usually 50 to 100 feet long. So for a 60-foot drain on the simpler end of the spectrum, you are looking at $2,400 to $3,000. For a longer, deeper drain in heavy clay soil that requires more equipment and labor, it can go up to $5,000 or more.
The biggest variable is soil conditions. In sandy or loamy soil that digs easily, the trenching goes fast and costs less. In heavy clay, which is common in the Cedar Valley, the digging is slower and harder on equipment. Clay also requires more gravel because the trench needs to be wider to accommodate proper drainage flow. If we hit rock, buried debris, or tree roots, that adds time and cost as well. We always account for these factors in our estimates so there are no surprises.
Depth matters too. A surface French drain that sits 12 to 18 inches deep is easier and cheaper than a deep perimeter drain that goes 4 to 5 feet down to intercept groundwater before it reaches your foundation. Deep drains are sometimes necessary for basement waterproofing, but they require more excavation, more gravel, and more careful installation. Most residential yard drainage needs can be handled with a 2 to 3 foot deep drain.
You may also need downspout connections or pop-up emitters. Connecting a downspout to the French drain adds $100 to $300 per connection depending on the distance and piping needed. Pop-up emitters that release water at the outlet end add a small amount to the total. These are worth including if you have gutter downspouts that currently discharge near the foundation.
